I decided to upgrade my home lab from vSphere 6.7 Update 1 to vSphere 6.7 Update 3. The way to do this is via the VAMI (VMware Appliance Management Interface). If your vCenter appliance has internet access this very straight forward, however, some organisations don’t allow internet connectivity, so the steps below are the simple to perform the or patch manually.
Step 1
Firstly before you do anything it’s a good idea to take a backup or VM snapshot of the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). To backup the appliance you will need to browse to the VAMI page https://<VCSA>:5480. Login with the root credentials and select Backup on the left. Before you can execute a backup you need to configure a remote backup location that supports the following protocols FTPS, HTTPS, SCP, FTP, NFS, SMB and HTTP. Since this is just my home lab I just took a virtual machine snapshot.
Step 2
Download the patch from https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/patch#search Select VC, then hit search. For this upgrade I selected VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.7.0.40000-14367737-patch-FP.iso
Step 3
Once the download has completed, mount the ISO to the VCSA VM then head back over to perform the upgrade. I will remind you to take a backup, when you are ready select Upgrade > Check Updates > Check CD ROM > Select the patch then press Stage and Install.
Accept the license agreement and follow the prompts then wait until the upgrade completes.
There you have it, the vCenter Appliance successfully updated. 🙂
